Nevermind – Nirvana

Nevermind is the second studio album from the Seattle based US rock band, Nirvana. Nevermind was released in 1991 and, against all odds, it became a huge success! Nevermind replaced Michael Jackson’s pop album ‘Dangerous’ on Billboard charts in early 1992, and the music world was never the same again!

Since then Nevermind has sold over 30 million units worldwide and it is single handedly responsible for introducing alternative rock (Grunge) on to mainstream. This would be mainly due to Nirvana’s powerful first single “Smells Like Teen Spirit“.

Nirvana Cover Baby

The legendary Nevermind album cover features a photograph, shot by Kirk Weddle, showing a circumcised baby boy swimming underwater reaching for a dollar bill. The cover image has been under serious debate since it’s release, and I bet there’s not a soul on earth who hasn’t wondered who is the child! (That is, if you’re interested in weird things like that).

Well, here’s your answer: the infant in the picture is Spencer Elden, who since then has become a bit of a celebrity in the punk rock scene. It’s good to know though that neither Spencer, nor his father, who put him up for the shoot, have not received any royalties from the image (in the true Grunge spirit!).

Nirvana Under Water

Here’s one of the rare Weddle’s photographs from the Nevermind sessions showing the band members Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic and Kurt Cobain having a blast underwater.
